Conductive Education

Conductive Education is an active teaching intervention specifically for those who have neurological disabilities including cerebral palsy. It is suitable for both children and adolescents who can engage with others in a group setting and follow instructions. Planned and structured activities are provided to students and are tailored to their individual needs. Those who teach the method are described as conductors and conductors are movement specialists and encourage students to develop solutions to their own challenges with their movement.

The method uses repetition and sensory feedback to encourage students to gain more control over their movement. The method can also help improve an individual’s self-image as the teaching occurs in a group setting and learners work together and motivate each other. There have been studies that show that conductive education increases the ability of the person with cerebral palsy to complete activities of daily living, such as self-care and mobility.
