Robotic Gait Training with a Lokomat

Robotic Gait Training with a Lokomat

What is it?

The Lokomat is a technologically advanced robot-assisted gait training device. The robotic legs guide the child through walking movements on a treadmill, supported by a harness. The level of weight bearing and assistance from the robotic legs is adjusted according to each individual child’s needs and progress throughout the training. To provide feedback on the force the child is generating while walking on the treadmill, and keep it fun, a videogame can be connected to the Lokomat.

What are the benefits?

This Lokomat is relatively new technology and the research evidence is therefore limited. The purpose of locomotor training is not necessarily to achieve functional independent walking; rather it serves to improve strength, coordination and function which can assist a child in using a walker and increase weight bearing effort. Improved weight bearing has the benefit of decreasing the risks of scoliosis during puberty, hip subluxations, ankle and knee deformities, weight gain, cardiovascular complications such as high blood pressure, skin breakdown, osteoporosis and fragility fractures. All improvements in mobility also have the benefit of improving lung and cardiovascular health which is very important for children with CP.

A recent study on the effectiveness of robot-assisted gait training can be found here.

Are there any risks?

It is important to discuss the treatment with your child’s pediatric neurologist or physiatrist prior to commencing treatment. It is also important to ensure your child’s training on the Lokomat is supported by pediatric therapists trained in neurorehabilitation to ensure optimal progress and prevent injuries or discomfort.

How do I access this therapy?

Intensive therapy using robotic gait training on Lokomat  from trained pediatric therapists who are specifically trained in neurorehabilitation may be accessed at the following centres:

How can we help?

If you have questions or if you are looking for community support - please contact us for free and confidential information

CP Smile Project

The CP Smile Project is a community project that helps ensure children with cerebral palsy have access to recreational opportunities that allow them to engage in play and community involvement. We give monthly bursaries to families to help them provide the support needed for their child to engage in play and have fun.
